Luralee Kiesel

I am an artist and a writer.
I eat pie for breakfast.
I make my own maple syrup.
I like to garden.
I have too many houseplants, three kids, and a cocker spaniel named Pepper. I was also a synchronized swimmer back in the day, if we want to get really random about this.
I got my MFA from Pratt Institute in 1999.
I had a solo show at Catherine Moore Gallery in Manhattan in 2000. I also sold paintings from my studio in DUMBO when it was still edgy, and lived in a converted clock factory for eight years before moving back to Michigan.

My paintings were exhibited at the Grand Rapids Art Museum during Artprize in 2010.
This fall, September 2-November 25, 2025, My exhibit "Climbers and Trailers" featuring 11 recent paintings is on display at the Gifts of Art gallery - Taubman Center in Ann Arbor.

The writing thing is self taught.
I wasn't one of those kids who dreamed of being an author when I grew up. Writing was my least favorite subject after math. However, I was always making up stories, often while procrastinating said math.

I started working on a novel in 2012, just to see if I could pull it off. I was so excited about the world and the characters I'd created, but I had to learn how to revise and edit for content. I spent untold hours devouring craft books and reading about writing fiction online. Now I've got a nearly completed Sci-Fi/Fantasy trilogy I'm happy with. Finally, daydreaming is justified!
